Income Diversity You know what they say – “teach a man to fish”! COMACO is a success story based on the principle that people long for the skills to have productive, fruitful lives. Rural villages of South Luangwa often rely on limited agriculture to survive. Poaching and charcoaling are supplemental trades practiced primarily by those unskilled in other income-earning occupations. To opening the doors to a wider array of livelihoods, COMACO provides the needed training needed to earn cash in modern Zambia. Broader skills means more ways to earn income and reduce poverty in Zambia. |
All COMACO-supported income earning activities maintain a principle of being economically viable while being ecologically sustainable. Income-generating projects such as Bee Keeping and Fish Farming are carefully chosen after consideration of the long term impact on the local environment as well as the likelihood of long term economic success. Ideal projects are those that can be started after brief training, while benefiting from ongoing training updates. Small scale hen and egg raising is an ideal example of an income earning strategy that can grow itself gradually as individual skills at flock managment, and ability to sustain and protect the birds improves. These early successes help reward initial efforts and provide much needed encouragment to new entrepreneurs!
